Mannok has successfully designed, manufactured, delivered and installed all of the precast concrete elements, including 3,000m2 of precast hollowcore slabs and 40 precast stairs and landings, on time for the construction of a new state of the art secondary school, St Mary’s Secondary School, in Ballina, Co. Mayo.
This is the first school in Ireland to be constructed by the Department of Education with enhanced specifications, to improve classroom layouts and the schedule of accommodation, and have more flexibility and innovation in the use of space. It is also designed to comply with ‘nearly zero energy building (NZEB) standards, supplying its own power via photovoltaic panels.
Project: St Mary’s Secondary School, in Ballina, Co. Mayo
Client: Department of Education
Main Contractor: Kilcawley Construction
Lead Design Team: BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd)
Product: 3000m2 Precast Hollowcore Flooring with a depth of 250mm, 28 Precast Stairs and Landings
Due to Mannok’s efficiency and ability to meet all the tight deadlines for the construction of this exemplar project, along with the company’s high standard of pre-planning and safe and efficient delivery of Programme of Works, Mannok was contracted by Kilcawley Construction to supply all precast concrete elements in the two-storey school with 25 classrooms.
Mannok’s end to end service offering for the project meant a collaborative approach to success was in operation long before a slab was laid or a staircase made. At an early stage of the project, Mannok undertook an extensive value engineering process, enabling its experienced Design Engineers to advise Kilcawley Construction on the most cost effective, bespoke design solution.
And just six weeks after the first order was placed, Mannok delivered and installed a lorry load of 3000m2 precast slabs with a depth of 250mm. Mannok then went on to meet every delivery and installation deadline for the next 60 loads of precast.
The project Contracts Manager, Martin McIntyre from Kilcawley Construction, who has worked with Mannok on a few occasions, commented on the company’s involvement in this project, saying,
“We are glad to have worked again with our supply chain partners at Mannok who delivered the extensive precast concrete scope on St. Mary’s Secondary School.”
Timing is critical to the success of any large-scale project, and Mannok’s Programme of Works, the speed of installation and “just in time” deliveries closely co-ordinated with the Steel Fabricators, all contributed to the safe and efficient completion of works, on time, on budget, and to the client’s specification.
