Quinn Cement join “select group” by achieving ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification

Quinn Cement have recently achieved ISO 50001 Energy Management certification by Certification Europe, underpinning the company’s commitment to continually improve its energy efficiency.

The certification is a standard which specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system.

The purpose is to enable an organisation to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy security, energy use and consumption. The standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use, and therefore their energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions.

Implementation required a team effort and commitment to continuous improvement at all levels in Quinn Cement and the team fully intends now to build energy savings using the ISO 50001 framework.

Michael Brophy of Certification Europe said,

“Quinn Cement deserve to be congratulated for what they have achieved today. By achieving certification to ISO 50001, Quinn Cement has pushed the boundaries in energy management and put themselves amongst a very select group of organisations worldwide that have achieved the Energy Management standard (ISO 50001).

Quinn Cement being awarded certification by accredited body such as Certification Europe makes it clear that the organisation is committed to improving the operational and environmental efficiency of its utilities and energy.”

ISO 50001 is widely recognised as a major leap forward in ‘raising the bar’ by requiring an organization to demonstrate that they have improved their energy performance. It has been highlighted as a key tool for climate action at the recent Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), a high-level global forum working to advance clean energy globally.

Speaking of the company’s accreditation, Quinn Cement’s General Manager, TP Feehan commented,

“Reducing our impact on the environment wherever possible is a priority for us. We believe that as a large manufacturer we have a responsibility to continually improve our operations, and enhance our sustainability standards. The changes we’ve implemented in achieving ISO 50001 certification has resulted in vast improvements in our energy efficiency. We also expect to see financial benefits from the changes, as our energy consumption is reduced.”
