St Michael’s College and Mannok Launch New Educational Robotic Initiative for Local Primary Schools

7th December 2023

The new programme, SME-Mannok Primary Schools Outreach Programme, kicked off on the 4th December. It involves Year 9 students and staff leaders from the Robotics Club at St Michael’s College, Enniskillen (SME), engaging with pupils at five local primary schools on a challenging problem-solving workshop using Mannok sponsored robotics.

The schools taking part in the educational robotic initiative are:

  • Jones Memorial school
  • Integrated Primary School
  • Model Primary School
  • Holy Trinity Primary School
  • St Patricks PrimarySchool, Mullanaskea

SME and Mannok have an award-winning partnership that has an innovative approach to providing pupils with opportunities to develop skills required for the modern world of work. The partnership launched initially in 2016 and it has provided young people with many fun, interactive and mentoring opportunities. The SME-Mannok Primary Schools Outreach Programme is the partnership’s latest project, and it is the first to involve primary schools.

The SME-Mannok Primary Schools Outreach Programme primary school pupils will have the opportunity to learn and write simple computer programmes, enabling robots to solve challenges. This is a hands-on approach to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and is a fun and interactive way to learn these vital skills. It is the brainchild of Mr Ciaran McDonagh, SME Teacher, who along with Mrs Stephanie O’Neill, also a Teacher at SME, runs the SME Robotics Club.

Commenting on the new programme, a spokesperson from St Michael’s College, Enniskillen, said,

“Thank you to all the primary schools who are taking part in this programme.

The continued support of Mannok ensures that the club thrives, and that local people get the opportunity to develop engineering and programming skills using the latest technologies. This type of partnership is the future of education, and we are delighted to have such an invested partner as Mannok. The SME-Mannok Primary Schools Outreach Programme is providing a unique intergraded learning programme for students in both primary and secondary education to develop together.”
